FC Schalke 04 managed to be directly promoted to the Bundesliga. The “Miners” were clearly left behind in Saturday night’s 2nd Division game (May 7, 2022) against FC St. Pauli, but fought their way back into the game and turned the tide.
Igor Mantanovic surprised the hosts on the 33rd day with an early double (9th, 17th), Schalke was trailing 2-0 at the break: the “Kiezkicker”, weakened by various corona cases, kept a cool head in the overheated atmosphere of the stadium and took the first chance. Jackson Irvine chased a pass from Leart Paqarada to Matanovic, who put the ball in front with a shot from the corner.
When the 19-year-old lone striker scored again just eight minutes later after another pass from Irvine and a subsequent solo, Schalke were sobered. “Königsblau” missed many scoring chances. The luck of the match seemed clearly on the side of the Hamburg guests, the fourth promotion to the Bundesliga after 1982, 1984 and 1991 seemed to have been postponed until at least the 34th and final matchday.
Terodde brace brings Schalke back into the game
But after the break, St. Pauli experienced the famous cold shower: Jakov Medić put Schalke striker Simon Terodde in the penalty area, the offending player converted the penalty and scored the goal (47th). St. Pauli then defended against attacks from Schalke, but then had to accept the equalizer in the 71st minute: Terodde again succeeded.
With the fans frenzied behind them, Schalke legend Mike Büskens’ side pushed for the third goal. At first, Martin Fraisl was able to parry a violent volley shot from Marcel Beifus with lightning reflex, but then the FC St. Pauli goalkeeper was helpless: Rodrigo Zalazar, former player of the Hanseatic city guests, converted an untenable model of Marius Bülter at 3:2. As a result, Beifus was sent off with a straight red, and teammate and two-time goalscorer Mantanovic was also sent off for two yellow cards in just under two minutes.
Mike Büskens: “Incredible, incredible!”
“It was our dream. You have to fight for dreams, you don’t get them for free. Great respect for this team, what they did. Amazing, amazing,” said a delighted Schalke manager Mike Buskens. And sporting director Rouven Schröder in the T-shirt with the inscription “Glück Auf Steiger” said: “It had to be exactly as it happened today, for the soul of Schalke. It’s a feeling – amazing what happened here on the pitch. Galactic, it’s just such a beautiful thing for us. It’s emotional because we put so much work into it.
FC St. Pauli’s promotion ambitions have suffered a serious setback, the chances of promotion are only theoretical. With a three-point gap to Zweite Hamburger SV and Dreier Darmstadt and a much worse goal difference, there are only theoretical chances. Werder Bremen can also move into second place with a win on Sunday at Aue. “The victory is well deserved for Schalke,” St. Pauli coach Timo Schultz told the Sportschau microphone, “we can only congratulate and end the season.”
