Relegation-threatened VfB Stuttgart earned a deserved draw at Bundesliga Bayern Munich before the championship trophy was handed over. This means that VfB is basically sure of relegation place 16.
Sunday May 8, 2022, the champions of Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart separated 2-2 (2-1). Tiago Tomás quickly put the visitors ahead on Matchday 33 (8′), but pressure from Bayern forced Konstantinos Mavropanos to score an own goal (35′). Thomas Müller turned things around (44′), but VfB striker Sasa Kalajdzic equalized (52′).
Due to Stuttgart’s draw, Arminia Bielefeld are now virtually relegated. Stuttgart are still 16th with 30 points, DSC are second to last with 27, but have a much worse goal difference. VfB can still reach 15th place if they win and Hertha BSC lose on the last day of the match, as Berlin (33 points) also have a worse record.
Matarazzo has yet to tick direct relegation
VfB coach Pellegrino Matarazzo was pleased with the result on the sports broadcast: “We also had the chance to win the match with a bit of luck.” He didn’t want to forget to stay in the league and underlined in a neutral tone: “It’s our job to win next Saturday.”
His opponent Julian Nagelsmann was happy with the championship trophy, but admitted it was “difficult” for him to disconnect and celebrate: “Defensively, we concede far too many chances against an opponent who is not having a good season. ” He still had a lot of work to do for next season, for example in terms of continuity.
Stuttgart is for Bayern just before the kick-off grid
Before the match started, Stuttgart showed their respect to Munich and stood guard. It was completely different at the start of the game.
Because suddenly, Omar Marmoush from Stuttgart had a great opportunity to take the lead after a high ball in the race. Tanguy Nianzou sprinted and had his foot between the two at the last moment (7th).
High balls leverage Bayern, defying Munich
And high balls on the Bayern chain remained the method of choice for VfB. Again Nianzou was dominated, again Marmoush put the turbo on and gave it to Tomas, who kicked the ball under the bar with fantastic direct acceptance.
Of course, the people of Munich didn’t like the prospect of a spoiled championship celebration. And so the FCB went full throttle. Müller only hit the crossbar (12′), Leon Goretzka missed another top goal (13′). After conceding, Bayern were superior and had a good 75% possession.
VfB failed to convert chances – Nianzou with problems
VfB, which at least theoretically tried in a 3-4-3 not to open space for Munich wingers Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, was watching for a counterattack.
In fact, this approach could have resulted in a 2-0 for the guests, but as so often this season, VfB also missed this opportunity. Marmoush missed his second big chance – clear past Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer – after Nianzou again proved to be a weak point (23rd).
Bayern pressure increases too much to hide in Stuttgart
But Bayern pushed and rewarded themselves before the break: Joshua Kimmich, playing his 200th Bundesliga game, hung up for Gnabry, whose conclusion was overlapped by Stuttgart’s Konstantinos Mavropanos on his own line to make 1- 1.
And then Müller used Dayot Upamecano’s pass with the pike to give Munich the lead – the game turned.
Kalajdzic header to equalize – Munich reveal shortcomings
Matarazzo apparently found the right words in the locker room, as after the restart Stuttgart gave their best.
After Bayern’s Müller missed another great chance at the post (51st), the guests cheered: Sosa hit the cross, Nianzou lost the duel with a header with Kalajdzic. It was only a little later that the latter could have upset the game again, but Kalajdzic was unable to get the upper hand on Neuer (54th).
Bayern revealed weaknesses in defense. Talent Nianzou, in particular, often looked unhappy and finished his work after a good hour. He was replaced by Niklas Süle (63rd), who will move to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer this summer.
Brave Stuttgart offers Bavaria more than fronts
Stuttgart, pushed by the tense situation in the basement of the table, offered Munich more than just a front in the final stage. Substitute Philipp Förster from Stuttgart himself missed two top goals (75th / 81st).
In a final phase with open visors, VfB goalkeeper Müller sent Robert Lewandowski’s shot on the crossbar (77th) – the hosts’ third goal. Bayern’s Kingsley Coman saw the red card for an assault on Mavropanos (90+5).
