RKI report: Corona situation continues to improve

Status: 05/06/2022 06:37

The RKI observes a further easing of the corona situation. The number of new infections and the seven-day incidence continue to decline compared to weekly. Nevertheless, experts warn: vaccination remains important.

Even in view of the recent sharp drop in infection rates, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) still sees considerable infection pressure and points out the benefits of corona vaccination. Over the past week, the seven-day incidence has decreased further from the previous one – namely by 19%, according to the RKI’s weekly report. The authors also note that the number of people treated in an intensive care unit with a diagnosis of Covid 19 has recently decreased further and the number of deaths has also decreased.

Vaccination has still “not lost its importance due to its high protective effect against severe course even in diseases caused by the omicron variant”. Regarding the vaccination campaign, experts point out that the majority of vaccinations currently administered are second boosters.

Probably not all cases covered

In the morning, the RKI gave the incidence over seven days at 553.2. The day before, the value of new contaminations per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 566.8 (previous week: 758.5 previous month: 1322.2).

However, the incidence does not give a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have assumed for some time that there will be a large number of cases not registered by the RKI – due to the overload of work of the health authorities and the fact that not all infected people undergo a PCR test. Only these count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to distortion of individual daily values.

The German health authorities reported 85,073 new corona infections at the RKI (previous week: 101,610 recorded infections) and 214 deaths (previous week: also 214) within one day.

In general, the number of new infections and deaths recorded varies considerably from weekday to weekday, as more and more federal states do not transmit to the RKI, especially on weekends, and report their cases later in the week. The RKI has counted 25,215,210 detected Sars-CoV-2 infections since the start of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

Seasonal effects help

Looking ahead to the fall, the chairman of the permanent vaccination committee, Thomas Mertens, recalled the benefits of the fourth vaccination. “We have to expect the risk of infection to increase again in the fall,” Mertens told the Funke media group newspapers. He called on people over 70 and others at particular risk of serious illness to use this time to improve their protection with a fourth vaccination.

With regard to the further development of the pandemic, the weekly report of the RKI again emphasizes that the development depends above all on the careful and considerate behavior of a large part of the population and the implementation of the recommendations known in protection against infections. “Currently, seasonal effects also contribute to reduced transmission,” the authors write against the backdrop of rising temperatures and increased outdoor activities.
