Amber Heard testifies against Johnny Depp: beatings before marriage

Vhe glamor did not stay after three weeks of trial. Johnny Depp, long one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, presented himself as an aging actor with addictions to alcohol, drugs and self-pity during the libel trial of his ex-wife Amber Heard. Even photos of severed fingertips, accompanied by fantasies of texting violence, shouldn’t necessarily have boosted his Q-Score, the measure of a celebrity’s popularity in the entertainment industry.

After his half-annoyed, half-confused appearance in Fairfax, more than 4,000 miles from Hollywood, Virginia, Disney’s decision to drop the 50-year-old from the scripts of the family blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” seems almost understandable. Financial adviser Michael Spindler calculated for the jury that ending the pirate role after Heard’s abuse allegations would have cost Depp more than $22 million. Overall, Spindler said, he estimates Depp’s losses from the allegations at more than $40 million. In his four-day testimony, Depp said he had not physically, psychologically or sexually abused Heard before their sudden split in May 2016, as the actress suggested in a Washington Post article. He did not repeatedly attack Heard, but the thirty-six him. “I am a victim of domestic violence,” Depp told the jury.

“I didn’t want it to be the reality”

It was Heard’s turn on Wednesday. According to psychiatrist Dawn Hughes, who diagnosed the Texan with post-traumatic stress disorder, she testified on the witness stand with constant volleys of assault. Depp gave her the first shots in 2012, two and a half years before the wedding. Heard was said to have been sitting on the sofa with her then lover, drinking wine, when he reached out and slapped her. The actress burst out laughing when, when asked about his tattoos, Depp replied that he had the word “Wino” tattooed on him. She was more than surprised by Depp’s slap in the face. “I kept laughing because I didn’t know how else to react. I thought it had to be a joke,” Heard testified through tears. Two more blows followed, the last so hard she slid off the couch onto the floor. “But I didn’t want to leave Johnny. I didn’t want it to be real. But I also knew you would never get over it,” the actress told the jury. Depp reportedly showed remorse. He knelt down next to her and began to cry. The next day he brought Heard several cases of wine and promised to better control “the damn fucker,” his dark side, in the future. In the courtroom, Depp kept his eyes downcast behind his tinted glasses.

When asked by her lawyer Elaine Bredehoft, Heard previously recalled the start of the romance: how she spoke to Depp in 2008 when they first met before filming the book adaptation of “The Rum Diary” about their shared love of the blues and some poetry. And how he kissed her on camera on set in Puerto Rico a few months later — with tongue and feeling instead of the usual repeat movie kiss. At the fall 2011 press tour, things got serious. “We fell madly in love. I felt like he understood me better than anyone else,” Heard testified. At the same time, the couple lived in a “bubble of secrecy.” Depp had allegedly separated from his girlfriend and mother of his two children, French actress Vanessa Paradis, a year earlier, but had not yet made public the end of the relationship.

Heard asks for $100 million

The “dream” in which Heard believed himself did not last long. The first slaps would have been followed by new attacks. During a camping trip to Joshua Tree National Park in May 2013, Depp allegedly violently penetrated the actress’ vagina with his fingers. As Heard testified, he accused her of hiding cocaine in her vagina after flirting with a camp visitor while she was on drugs. A few months later, a vacation with Depp’s children, Lily-Rose and Jack, on the actor’s private island in the Bahamas reportedly came to an abrupt end. Depp allegedly became violent at the time because he suspected Heard of telling the teenagers about their father’s drinking. “He pushed my neck against the bedroom wall and held me there. He told me he could kill me and that I was embarrassed,” Heard said on the witness stand Wednesday.

Why the actress walked off the aisle with Depp a year and a half later after the alleged abuse could be discussed in part two of her statement. Presiding Judge Penney Azcarate has added three more weeks of trial to the Hollywood star slugfest – in which Depp demands $50 million from his ex-wife as she demands $100 million from him.
