The capture of Azovstal has begun
In the port city of Mariupol, Russian troops had already begun storming the besieged Azovstal steelworks. According to Russian news agencies, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow said that “units of the Russian army and the Donetsk People’s Republic” had begun “with artillery and aircraft” to destroy “positions of combat” of the Ukrainian troops.
In addition to the Ukrainian fighters, around 200 civilians are believed to be stuck in the factory premises. Over the weekend, more than 120 people were rescued with international assistance. However, another evacuation action scheduled for Monday failed. Overall, Mariupol would still have 100,000 inhabitants out of the original over 400,000 inhabitants.
More than 100 of those rescued over the weekend have now reached the town of Zaporizhia. Zaporizhia is under Ukrainian control and is located about 230 kilometers northwest of Mariupol.
Russia has been waging a war of aggression against its neighbor for more than two months. The UN has so far recorded around 3,200 civilian deaths, but assumes the number of casualties is much higher.
