Shortened corona isolation: Free tests are still urgently recommended

People infected with Corona should self-isolate for five days in the future. According to Minister of Health Lauterbach, the obligation to test oneself afterwards freely should no longer apply. However, a negative test is strongly recommended. Not all countries want to follow this.

With the prescribed isolation for people infected with corona five days in the future, a last negative test should be urgently recommended. According to Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach, this is what the new Corona guidelines provide. There is no obligation to take the test – as was the case until now.

Overall, Lauterbach spoke of a “solution with a sense of proportion”. He explained that the isolation could be shortened to five days due to the shorter disease course of the current omicron BA.2 variant. So far, the secretions usually last about ten days and can end prematurely with a negative test after seven days.

The test for health workers still mandatory

For infected healthcare personnel, however, such a “free test” should remain mandatory. Lauterbach also confirmed that isolation of infected people should continue to be ordered by health authorities. This gives the signal that Corona is not a flu or a cold.

If someone comes near infected people, “then they’re actually putting their lives at risk,” Lauterbach said. In the decision that has just been taken, he generally spoke of a “solution with a sense of proportion”.

The concrete implementation of the rules in accordance with the recommendation of the RKI and the Federal Ministry of Health is the responsibility of the federal states.

Bavaria: “General recommendation not foreseen”

Several countries had already signaled that they did not want to support a general recommendation for free testing. “We see the issue of free testing a bit differently from the Federal Minister of Health,” said Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek. A fundamental and general recommendation to test yourself after the end of the isolation if you have no symptoms is not provided for in Bavaria, Holetschek told the “Rheinische Post” in Düsseldorf.

The shortened five-day isolation period has been in effect in Bavaria since mid-April. Holetschek stressed that you must be symptom-free for 48 hours before the end of isolation. However, Bavaria recommends wearing a mask for a while afterwards.

Among other things, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse also wanted to do the same, Holetschek said. On the other hand, there is agreement on facilities such as hospitals and care facilities. Vulnerable groups must continue to be protected “and are at the center of our efforts”, underlined the political leader of the CSU.
