Newel/Hohensonne After a serious accident, the B51 between Hohensonne and Newel is currently totally blocked. Full closure should take several hours. One person was seriously injured. (Pictures)
As the police reported, a 36-year-old driver from the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm drove the B51 in the direction of Trier and started to overtake. He collided head-on with an oncoming truck. The 36-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries by a rescue helicopter. The driver of the truck is in shock after the accident.
In order to clarify the cause of the accident and the exact sequence of events, the public prosecutor of Trier commissioned an expert report. The B51 must have been completely blocked – the blockage is still in progress.
The police are therefore asking road users to avoid the journey as much as possible. Traffic has come to a complete stop at the Radenborner Steingrube. Motorists had to bring a lot of patience with them.
Trier police spokesman Marc Fleischmann said an official diversion would be in place, but could be delayed due to traffic problems. Clearing the B51 will probably take several hours. Motorists should expect corresponding delays by then.
The busy federal highway 51 connects the cities of Trier and Bitburg or the A60 and has been partially extended to three lanes in this area. The route between Bitburg and the A60 junction is currently dual carriageway, but is to be widened by 2025.
In January 2022, a van left the road near Meilbrück and the federal road was temporarily impassable due to rescue work. In August and September 2021, two young drivers died after collisions near Fliessem and Helenenberg.
